Annual Report
Publication Design
How can we transform complex academic data into a clear visual narrative while strictly adhering to institutional brand standards?
During my internship at Kapiʻolani Community College, I designed the 2020–2021 Annual Report. The project focused on translating a year’s worth of academic data and accomplishments into a structured, professional publication.
My goal was to move beyond simple reporting by creating an engaging visual experience that remains accessible to all stakeholders.
Tools: InDesign
Problem
Data Complexity: The report contained dense academic data and statistics that could easily become overwhelming for the reader. The challenge was to identify the most critical information and present it in a way that is both intuitive and visually digestible at a glance.
Rigid Brand Constraints: I had to work within a strict campus style guide. Maintaining institutional consistency while ensuring the layout felt modern and professional, rather than repetitive, required a careful balance of typography and grid systems.
Solution
Information Visualization: I utilized infographics and structured data layouts to simplify complex information. By converting raw data into clear visual elements, I improved overall readability and allowed stakeholders to grasp key accomplishments immediately without losing the necessary detail.
Systematic Layout Design: To respect the brand guidelines, I applied a consistent typographic hierarchy and a refined color palette. I focused on strategic use of white space and clear sectioning to create a cohesive narrative flow, ensuring that the final print publication felt like a natural extension of the college’s identity.
